Back to School - Are Parents Ready?

Suva, Fiji - This is probably one of the biggest question on everyone’s mind. With thousands of jobs lost in the last 3 months- Are parents able to afford sending their children back to school at this time?

Parents who have lost their jobs during this pandemic will have until 6th July to source funds for their children’s bus fares / boat fares, lunches, snacks, stationary, shoes and all things that go with preparing one’s child for school.

Speaking to a single mother who is also the bread winner of her family, the young mother began to sell cake on the road side of her home in Nadi to prepare for her children that will be heading back to school on the 6th of next month.

The mother of four acknowledges her previous employer who has kindly continued to offer her along with her fellow staff a small weekly allowance, allowing her to start this small venture to cater for her children’s school needs.

This is only one story out of thousands of parents and guardians across the country who will need to make the necessary sacrifices to ensure their children receive the education they rightly deserve.

Compared to USA which has a school summer break for 3 months, Fiji has never had a 3 month school break, so it will be interesting to see how our students adapt when returning to school.

The Ministry of Education has announced at the last press conference that students that are currently on the bus fare school assistance will be able to continue on the assistance and those parents who have been affected by the pandemic can also apply.
